The art of Snow Shoveling, and the danger

12/5/2025

Little did I know this week that snow shoveling may as well be an art form. I actually honestly enjoyed shoveling don't tell though). I appreciated I felt strong enough to do it, and it was pretty outside ( I remembered my gloves this time).

I will admit that usually, that is my partners "job". But I had had a shorter day due the weather, so I went out to shovel.
I had so many questions that Youtube answered later. I haphazardly cleared the sidewalk, making my own pattern, diagonal across the sidewalk into the street. Little did I know that is illegal.

I looked at others techniques, most use snow blowers, the snow was light so I was grateful about that. I also learned later, you can spray your shovel with cooking spray. Well, I piled snow onto the street, I was happy my back felt good, I used my weight. I have seen the injuries that occur after shoveling in my office!  Now the driveway, that was haphazard, I did what I could. I learned from a video later, you are supposed to go down the middle and then out. Ok, next time I will be a perfect snow shoveler.

You are supposed to put your snow on your own property, so it doesn't muck up the road. Oopsy. How inconsiderate of me!

Also I guess shoveling snow can be dangerous! Who knew? The biggest cause of death, yes death, is heart attacks during shoveling, so if you feel lightheaded take a break, use your legs and push the snow, don't lift it too much.

I couldn't help either but to contemplate the metaphor of putting your snow back on your own property, so it doesn't make it hard to drive in the street, always a way to be courteous to others. Next time I will know the rules, but I still like my own unique pattern.

Tips: drink water, take breaks, take care of your back, push with your legs & weight, don't toss the snow too much (that is harder when you don't put it in the street I found). But if you do tweak a muscle or your back, we welcome you here !

Also, don't forget to notice the magic and wonder. Feeling wonder is healing for our nervous system!
Warmly, Stefanie Rothert LAc, LMT, FABORM
